Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) provide heart and kidney benefit in adults with diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Public drug coverage policies for SGLT2i differ by province in Canada. Our study aimed to describe the potential effects of prior authorization / step therapy (PA/ST) and relatively high income-based deductibles, compared to regular benefit status with modest co-pay, on SGLT2i prescriptions in high-risk adults.

In our article in the February 2024 issue of the Canadian Journal of Diabetes [1], we highlighted that support for open-source artificial pancreas systems is currently impeded in many cases by technical complexity and absence of regulatory approval. We showed that, with appropriate clinical support and infrastructure, these systems were associated with safe improvement of glycemia and quality of life. Since then, several endocrinologists across Canada have reached out to our clinic regarding clinical collaborations to implement models of care for supported open-source artificial pancreas systems (SOSAPSs).

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a temporary condition of pregnancy, identifies women at high risk of developing subsequent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Lifestyle interventions have been shown to reduce the risk of developing T2D after GDM. However, they often have low attendance and adherence rates. The Avoiding Diabetes After Pregnancy Trial in Moms (ADAPT-M) is a 24-week home-based postpartum program aimed at bridging the gap from prenatal care to T2D prevention for women with GDM. Our objective was to explore the experiences of participants who completed the ADAPT-M program, to elicit their perceived benefits and opportunities for improvement.

The aim of this research was to understand the prevalence and impact of long COVID on adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Specifically, we sought to identify the proportion of adults with T2D who have had COVID-19 and experienced long COVID symptoms. We also explored how these ongoing symptoms impact diabetes management and physical activity participation.
